Hi Barbara! Congrats! I just brought my baby boy home this weekend and I gotta tell ya....they ain't lying about the characteristics of an Ekkie.

They have got to be the most laid back bird I've ever seen. They truly do "freeze" when stressed or scared so don't worry if he seems to just sit there and stare. He's taking it all in. Slow, quite, love and patience is all its gonna take.

I set my fids (the Ekkie and I have a little conure)up on a routine right away. My conure came on a Tuesday night and went right into our busy weekly schedule of school, work, evening routine bed. He's a trooper. The Ekkie, same thing. Right into our routine. I have been trying to quarantine the birds but the Ekkie really wants to be apart of whats going on. That's also how they are. They want to be with you, doing what you are doing. My Ekkie comes looking for us, walking around the house, following the sounds of our voices. I really see how they got such a bad rap at first....being stupid or slow. The are so delibrate about their movements and very detailed oriented. My Ekkie likes to pick the knots out of the toys we hang up. The conure likes to destroy the toys we hang up. I'm not in WA. I'm in MD. But you can email me if you want. jwaters@capreit.com.

I know it helps having someone else how can relate with a brand new bird etc. Make sure he gets his soft foods and fresh foods. Don't be surprised if the poops are running at first but keep an eye on him.

Johanna
