BALI BIRD PARK ECLECTUS
Thanks to Bruce, a friend who recently visited Bali, Indonesia, here are
some interesting pictures of a "colony"of Red Sided Eclectus parrots at
the Taman Burung Bali Bird Park in Batubulan. The curator of the park is a
German fellow by the name of Jiri Holba. The colony consists of
approximately fifty Eclectus parrots.
The Eclectus parrots are only a small part of the collection--about 350
species-- which includes many Birds of Paradise, Pesquets and Black Palm
Cockatoos. Mr. Holbra is a major force in the Bali Mynah conservation
project. The number of Bali Mynahs is down to 15 birds in wild and about 50
captive birds, most of the captives birds are to the credit of Mr. Holbra.

The park is beautifully kept, as evidenced by the Eclectus enclosure.
According to Bruce, the walk-in aviary is magnificent! He stated that the
bird park made the trip to Bali worthwhile for him because, in his opinion,
it has become a tourist trap over the past ten years. Bruce admitted, "I'm
kind of jaded as the first time I went to Bali was in 1967 when the girls
were still going topless--REALLY!"
